“Please,” he whispered. “That’s why I’ve stayed here every night. You have to hear what she says when she thinks you’re asleep.”
Before I could ask anything else, footsteps stopped outside the room.
Walter’s eyes widened.
“Granny… she’s coming.”
I quickly closed my eyes.
The door opened.
Lisa walked inside.
For several seconds, the room was completely silent.
Then she gave a quiet, unsettling laugh.
“Still waiting for her to wake up? That’s pathetic, Walter. You really don’t know when to give up, do you?”
Walter said nothing.
Lisa moved closer to my bed.
“Fine. Since you’re so determined to sit here, maybe it’s time I told you a little secret about your grandmother.”
I kept my eyes shut, barely daring to breathe.
Then she spoke.
And the words that followed made my heart sink into my stomach.
The rest of the story is in the first comment. 👇
Lisa leaned closer to the bed and lowered her voice.
“Your grandmother left you something, Walter. Something that should have been mine. She was never going to tell you the truth.”
My heart pounded beneath the blanket.
“She put the house in your name,” Lisa continued. “And after everything she has done for you, she expects me to walk away with nothing.”
Walter’s breathing became shaky.
Then Lisa whispered, “But she won’t be around much longer.”
My blood ran cold.
