David closed his eyes.
“Sarah, please.”
“No, Dad. Enough. You’ve called me every single day this week, telling me what a wonderful woman Mary is. And now you want her to go home without knowing the truth.”
I turned toward David.
“What truth?”
He sat down on a nearby bench.
For the first time, I saw an expression on his face that I had never noticed before.
Fear.
“Mary, my wife, Nancy, died three years ago. That part is true.”
“And?”
“But I haven’t told you what happened after she died.”
Sarah looked away.
David continued.
“We were married for forty-six years. Nancy was the only woman I had ever loved. When she died, I simply stopped living.”
His voice trembled.
“For months, I barely left the house. I didn’t want to see anyone. Sarah came over every day, brought me food, and tried to get me out of the house.”
