I’d never followed my husband before, and I hated how natural it felt.
He reached the intersection where he normally turned toward his office.
He went straight.
Twenty minutes later, he pulled into the lot of a low brick building I’d never noticed.
He went inside carrying his laptop.
A few minutes later, he came back out with an older man.
“Frank?”
Frank had lived next door when Eliam and I bought our first house. His wife, Marian, had died two years earlier. I hadn’t seen Frank since the funeral.
Now he was walking beside my husband carrying a bright green lunchbox covered in cartoon dinosaurs.
My theory about another woman disappeared instantly.
A stranger question replaced it.
Why had Eliam taken a week off work to secretly meet Frank?
They sat at an outdoor table. Eliam opened his laptop. Frank pulled cards from a folder.
I couldn’t hear them, but I could see Frank struggling.
Then I noticed the sign:
ADULT LEARNING CENTER
READING • WRITING • DIGITAL SKILLS
Frank wasn’t showing Eliam business documents.
He was learning to read.
But why had my husband needed a fake workweek to help him?
That evening, I put Eliam’s medication in the middle of the kitchen table.
He stopped when he saw it.
“I told you I’d grab that.”
“From the office?”
He understood immediately.
“I can explain.”
“I went there yesterday.”
He pulled out a chair.
“I know you’ve been on leave all week.”
“Yes.”
“And this morning I followed you.”
His eyebrows lifted.
“You followed me?”
