Eliam’s pill bottle was still beside the coffee maker ten minutes after he kissed me goodbye and left for work.
That morning had been ordinary.
Shower. Coffee. Tie. Laptop.
“Meeting from hell at nine,” he said.
“Have fun.”
“I’d rather reorganize the garage.”
His office was on my way to work, so I grabbed his medication and stopped for his usual coffee.
At reception, I smiled.
“Hi. I’m Eliam’s wife. He forgot his medication. Could you let him know I’m downstairs?”
The receptionist checked her computer.
Then she frowned.
“Eliam?”
I gave her his department.
“Ma’am, your husband’s been on leave for a week.”
I kept smiling.
“Really?”
“Yes. He’s due back Monday.”
I thanked her and walked out.
I sat in my car with Eliam’s coffee cooling beside me.
A week.
Every morning, he’d gotten dressed for work. Packed his laptop. Kissed me goodbye. Complained about meetings.
I picked up my phone.
“You forgot your medication.”
His reply came less than a minute later.
“Crazy morning at work. I’ll grab it later.”
I read it twice.
He’d just lied to me while I was sitting outside the building where he claimed to be.
We’d been married eleven years. I’d never checked his messages, tracked his location, or questioned his passwords.
Now one pill bottle had made the entire week feel staged.
The next morning, Eliam left at 7:40.
I followed at 7:45.
