I confronted Daniel.

He finally admitted he had taken it.

But there was something written on the back that I had never seen.

It was Adam’s handwriting:

“For when you finally meet somebody who looks at you the way you deserve.”

I stared at Daniel.

“You knew my brother?”

He nodded.

Years before we met, Daniel and Adam had worked at the same sporting goods warehouse.urm

Daniel remembered Adam clearly. He said Adam was loud, confident, and impossible to ignore.

“He thought every room belonged to him,” Daniel said.

I almost laughed.

That sounded exactly like Adam.

Then Daniel told me about something that had happened years ago. Someone at work had joked that Daniel should ask me out.

Adam had laughed and said, “My sister? She’d eat Daniel alive.”

Everyone laughed, including Daniel.

But he never forgot it.

He had spent years believing Adam thought he wasn’t good enough for me.

Then Daniel found an old message that proved he had been wrong.

Adam had written:

“Honestly, if she ever finds somebody that decent, I’ll tell her not to screw it up.”

I read it again and again.

Daniel had been carrying the wrong meaning of that old joke for eleven years.

Then he told me something even more painful.

Adam had once said about me, “My sister likes everyone to think she doesn’t need anybody. She does.”

I broke down.

Daniel had known parts of my brother that I never knew.

He had heard his laugh, worked beside him, and remembered things about him that were lost to me forever.
