Robert suggested taking us to the seaside.
We spent a beautiful afternoon together, sitting on a stone bench overlooking the ocean. Ben wore his favorite red cap.
We took a family photograph.
urm
Then Robert quietly asked me to stand a few steps away.
“Why?” I asked.
“Just trust me.”
I turned around and saw Ben standing beside his grandfather, holding a tiny yellow flower.
“Grandma, I have a present for you!”
Robert stood close enough to catch him.
Then Ben slowly released his grandfather’s hand.
One step.
Two steps.
Three.
I covered my mouth, already crying.
“I’m coming, Grandma!”
He took two more steps and reached my outstretched arms.
I dropped to my knees and held him tightly.
“Happy birthday, Grandma,” he whispered, handing me the flower.
Robert stood nearby, tears running down his cheeks.
That afternoon, I understood something important.
My husband had wanted to help our grandson, but he had also learned that love means knowing when to stop, listen, and respect a child’s fear.
