“Because Ben wanted to surprise you on your birthday. He wanted to walk toward you and give you a flower.”
Ben nodded.
“Grandpa said you’d cry because you’d be happy.”
My eyes filled with tears, but something still bothered me.
“Then why was he begging you to stop?”
Robert lowered his head.
“Because I made a mistake. Today, he tried walking without holding my hands. When he lost his balance, he got frightened. I kept encouraging him to try again, even after he wanted to stop.”
His voice broke.
“I wanted him to succeed so badly that I forgot he was only five.”
I turned toward Ben.
“Sweetheart, did you like practicing?”
“At first. Grandpa clapped whenever I took another step. But today I was scared.”
“Then why didn’t you tell me?”
“Grandpa said it was a secret. I didn’t want him to be sad.”
I held his hands.
