MY HUSBAND CHEATED WITH OUR SON’S WIFE—SO MY SON AND I GAVE THEM A PUNISHMENT THEY NEVER SAW COMING 027

You lost enough years.

Do not lose another day arguing over land, money, or ghosts.

Build something that stays.

—Dad

Daniel unfolded the deed.

My father had already placed a protected section of the mountain into a charitable trust.

Eighty acres.

Right around the quarry.

“What did he want built here?” Daniel asked.

Rebecca turned over the final page.

There was one sentence.

A place for women and children who need somewhere safe to disappear without becoming dead to the people who love them.

Rebecca covered her mouth.

For twenty-seven years, hiding had saved her life.

And destroyed part of it.

Dad wanted something better for the next person.

The land deal eventually closed.

Not for seventeen million.

Not for twenty.

A bidding dispute between two corporations drove the total package to thirty-one million dollars, while we retained the

protected eighty acres.

After taxes and legal costs, Rebecca and I still received more money than either of us had ever imagined.

Daniel refused my offer to give him millions.

“I want enough to start over,” he said. “Not enough to stop becoming somebody.”

So I helped him buy a small house.

He filed for an annulment.

Jenna did not contest it.

Before leaving town, she asked to see him once.

They met in a park.

I wasn’t there.

Daniel told me about it afterward.

“She said she loved me.”

“What did you say?”

“I told her maybe she did.”

He stared toward the window.

“But love without truth becomes something else.”

I didn’t ask more.

Six months later, the trial began.

Mark pleaded guilty after three former associates turned against him.

The prosecutor told me he might spend the rest of his useful life in prison.

I visited him

once.
