One had Emma’s name written on it. Another had Jack’s.
And the third carried a name I had never expected to see.
Daniel.
I didn’t recognize that name.
I opened the first box and discovered several empty cigarette packs, tiny pieces of paper, and a sentence written in a child’s handwriting.
“Grandma, we won another one!”
My heart started pounding.
The second box contained similar notes.
But inside the third box was an old photograph.
It showed a much younger Martha holding a little boy in her arms.
The boy looked remarkably like my husband.
But it wasn’t Mike.
Then I heard my mother-in-law’s voice behind me.
“That’s my oldest son, Daniel.”
I turned around.
Martha was standing in the doorway, with Emma and Jack behind her.
“Mike never told you about his brother?” she asked.
I shook my head.
Martha sat down on the edge of her bed.
