And beside her sit her two grandchildren, who love listening to Grandma’s stories.
One evening, Emma asked her a question.
“Grandma, are you ever afraid you’ll start smoking again?”
Martha smiled.
“Sometimes, sweetheart. But now I know there’s nothing shameful about asking for help.”
Then she turned toward me.
“Do you know what hurts me the most, Sarah?”
“What?”
“That I never got to say to Daniel what I can say to you today.”
She gently squeezed my hand.
“Thank you for not giving up on me.”
After those words, I couldn’t say anything.
I simply hugged her.
Because sometimes, the most difficult person in a family is the one who needs our help the most.
