My heart broke when I realized how long she had been preparing for someone to finally believe her.
The social worker took the phone.
One officer began photographing the bruises.
The other asked Daniel to step away from Mom.
He refused.
“You can’t take my mother out of this house.”
The officer calmly showed him the order.
“Sir, this order requires you to stay away from her.”
Daniel looked at me.
“You did this.”
I met his eyes.
“No.”
I pointed toward Mom.
“She did.”
Vanessa suddenly started crying.
“We took care of her!”
“You sold her cabin,” I said.
“You emptied her accounts.”
“You took her phone.”
“You threatened her.”
“You don’t get to call that care.”
Vanessa stopped crying.
The social worker asked Mom if she wanted to leave immediately.
Mom looked around the house.
At the dining table.
At the photographs on the wall.
At the staircase where she had spent months afraid to walk after dark.
Then she shook her head.
“I don’t want anything from this house.”
She looked at me.
“I just want my daughter.”
I took her hand.
“You have me.”
We walked out together.
Behind us, Daniel shouted my name.
“Claire!”
I stopped at the doorway.
He stood in the hallway with two officers beside him.
