I married my patient knowing she had only three days left to live — but after her funeral, her sister approached me with a small box and whispered, “She made me promise not to give you this until she was gone.

Rebecca reached into the box and took out a small recording device.

“She wanted you to hear this.”

My hands shook as I pressed play.

Alicia’s familiar voice filled the silence.

“Hello, Doctor Lucas.”

I covered my mouth.

Even now, she sounded as though she were smiling.

“If you’re listening to this, Rebecca finally gave you my surprise.”

She paused.

“I know you’re probably angry that I didn’t tell you sooner. But when I first recognized you, I couldn’t believe it.”

Her voice grew quieter.

“I remembered a little boy who shared his pudding with me when I was scared. A boy who promised that one day he’d become a doctor and make sick children better.”

Tears streamed down my face.

“I thought about telling you immediately. But I was afraid you’d only see the sick little girl you once knew.”

She took a shaky breath.
