Almost two years later, Lily officially became our daughter.
That evening, Michael tucked her into bed, pulled the blanket over her shoulders, and kissed her forehead.
When he came out of her bedroom, he took my hand.
“Sarah, do you remember what we used to say every night?”
I nodded.
“We don’t have to say it anymore,” he whispered.
Just then, we heard Lily’s little voice coming from her bedroom.
“Mommy! Daddy! Goodnight! I love you both!”
I wrapped my arms around my husband and began crying.
For eighteen years, I’d waited for someone to call me Mommy.
And because of that little girl, I finally understood that giving birth isn’t the only way to become a mother.
We could never get back the years we’d lost.
But we finally had the family we’d dreamed of for so long.
And most importantly, there were no more secrets in our home.
