“I thought you hated me.”
“I hated what had happened to us, Dad. Every day, I was terrified I’d lose you too, just like Mom. I just wanted my father back.”
Robert embraced his son.
“And I forgot that you’re still just a boy, son. You should never have had to carry all of this alone.”
The following months were not easy.
With professional help, Robert began his recovery, stopped drinking alcohol, and gradually learned to move again.
Six months later, for the first time, he managed to take a few steps using a walker.
Daniel stood in front of him.
“Come on, Dad. You can do it!”
Robert took another step on trembling legs.
Then he stopped and began to cry.
“Daniel… I’m walking.”
The boy rushed toward his father and hugged him tightly.
Robert whispered,
“Eighteen years ago, I held your little hand and taught you how to walk, son. And today, you’re teaching me how to stand on my feet again. I thought I’d lost my son, but all this time, you were trying to give me my fatherhood back.”
