A 68-Year-Old Inmate Was Quietly Washing Clothes in the Prison Yard When the Most Feared Woman There Grabbed Her by the Hair and Forced Her Face Toward the Dirty Soapy Water — But Minutes Later, Something Happened That Left the Entire Neva Yard Silent

“How do you know my name?”

Helen slowly stood.

And what she said next made even the women who had been laughing fall completely silent.

PART 2

Tasha stared at Helen for several seconds.

The entire yard had gone quiet.

Helen slowly wiped the dirty water from her face and repeated:

“Your last name is Carter, isn’t it?”

Tasha’s expression changed.

“How do you know that?”

Helen looked at her carefully.

“Because I knew your mother.”

For the first time, Tasha looked uncertain.

A few inmates nearby stopped pretending not to listen.

Helen took a slow breath.

“Her name was Denise Carter. She worked nights at St. Mary’s Hospital almost thirty years ago.”

Tasha’s face tightened.

“That doesn’t mean anything.”

“It should.”

Helen’s voice remained calm.

“I was the nurse who stayed with her the night she brought you in.”

Tasha froze.

Helen continued.

“Your mother was terrified. She had nowhere to go, no money, and no one she trusted. She kept saying one thing over and over.”

Tasha’s jaw clenched.

“What?”

Helen looked directly at her.

“She said she was afraid you would grow up believing nobody had ever wanted you.”

The anger on Tasha’s face started to crack.

Helen reached into the pocket of her prison uniform and pulled out a small folded piece of paper.

It was old, worn, and covered in faded handwriting.

“I kept this for years.”

Tasha stared at it.
