Most of the women left her alone.
Helen never argued, never tried to prove anything, and barely spoke unless someone addressed her first.
But there was one inmate nobody ignored.
Her name was Tasha.
Tasha was large, aggressive, and feared throughout the prison. She had spent years controlling the yard through intimidation. Other women gave her food, cleaned for her, and avoided looking at her for too long.
Very few people ever told Tasha no.
One afternoon, Helen was sitting beside the plastic basin, slowly scrubbing a shirt, when a large pile of dirty clothes suddenly landed beside her.
Helen looked up.
Tasha was standing over her.
“Wash those too,” she said.
Helen looked at the pile, then back at Tasha.
Her hands were already trembling from fatigue.
“I’m sorry,” Helen said quietly. “I can barely finish what they gave me. You’ll have to wash your own.”
Everything around them seemed to stop.
Several women looked over.
One inmate immediately lowered her eyes.
Another quietly moved away.
Helen noticed the reaction but didn’t understand why everyone suddenly looked so nervous.
Tasha stared at her.
“You telling me no?”
Helen swallowed.
“I’m telling you I can’t do it.”
For a second, Tasha didn’t move.
Then her expression changed.
She stepped forward, grabbed Helen by the hair, and forced her downward toward the basin.
Helen cried out and tried to pull away.
The plastic container tipped slightly, dirty soapy water spilling across the concrete.
No one moved to help.
Everyone was too afraid of Tasha.
Helen struggled to keep herself upright while Tasha laughed and tightened her grip.
“You should’ve learned how things work around here, Grandma.”
Helen’s face was wet, her breathing uneven, but when Tasha finally released her, she didn’t beg.
She slowly lifted her head.
For the first time, there was something different in her eyes.
Not fear.
Recognition.
Helen looked at Tasha’s face for several long seconds.
Then she quietly said:
“Your last name is Carter, isn’t it?”
Tasha’s smile disappeared.
The women around them looked at one another.
Tasha froze.
