There were no houses nearby.<\/p>\n

No one asking for help.<\/p>\n

Only she, alone in the darkness, as if someone had left her there and disappeared.<\/p>\n

Disabled and special needs<\/div>\n

I ran to her screaming,<\/p>\n

\u201cMa\u2019am, can you hear me?\u201d<\/p>\n

But he did not answer.<\/p>\n

Her skin was freezing, her lips almost blue and her breathing was so weak that I had to get very close to make sure she was still alive.<\/p>\n

I wrapped his body shaking with my jacket, called in emergencies and begged him to resist.<\/p>\n

The police asked me if I had seen anyone nearby, but all I had seen was the wheelchair, the rain and their still body.<\/p>\n

Then, near dawn, he finally opened his eyes.<\/p>\n

The old woman whispered her name.<\/p>\n

I ran my thumb along the left edge of the pendant until I felt the hinge, right where my mother had shown it to me, just as I remembered it.<\/span><\/p>\n

I pressed it gently and the medallion opened. It was empty. But inside was engraved a small floral motif that I would have recognized even in total darkness.<\/span><\/p>\n

My father wouldn’t let me use it until I turned 18.<\/span><\/p>\n

I gripped the pendant tightly and felt my pulse quicken. Either my memory was playing tricks on me… or something was very wrong.<\/span><\/p>\n
