I adopted my granddaughter’s three children after she eloped with her husband. Fifteen years later, she returned for the elder’s birthday, and he gave her a gift that left her pale.

“Then… can you forgive me?”

He kept quiet for a long time.

Maybe someday.

Hope appeared briefly on Lily’s face.

Then he finished the sentence.

But forgiveness doesn’t change what happened.

And it doesn’t make us a family again either.

Hope has disappeared.

Because they both knew it was true.
Lily stood still for several seconds.

Then he nodded slowly.

As if he finally understood something that had taken fifteen years to accept.

I guess I deserve it.

No one answered.

Because that was not about punishment.

It was really about it.

Lily looked around the room.

The photographs on the shelf.

The framed school images.

The handmade decorations.

The birthday memories.

The trophies.

The footprints of a whole life.

A life she had not shared.

“I missed everything,” he whispered.

“Yes,” Noah replied.

His eyes filled with tears.

Who taught you how to drive?

“The grandfather.

Who was at your graduation?

“The grandfather.

Who helped you when you opened your company?

“The grandfather.

Each response fell like another brick on a weight that already seemed impossible to carry.

Lily turned to Phoebe.

“And you?”

Phoebe shrugged.

“He too.

Then to Kelly.

“And you?”

Kelly smiled softly.

“Always he.

The silence filled the room.

Finally Lily looked straight at me.

“You did it right.

I didn’t know what to say.

Because for years I had wanted to hear something like that.

And now that it finally came, it didn’t mean much anymore.

“I just did what had to be done.

Lily nodded.

“No. You did a lot more than that.

She looked down.

I could never have done what you did.

I know.

It was not a cruel response.

Just honest.

And for the first time, she didn’t argue.

After a few minutes, he took the box again.

I think I should go.

No one tried to stop her.

He walked up to the door.

Then he turned one last time to Noah.

Happy birthday.

Noah nodded.

Thank you.

She smiled faintly.

And it came out.

We watched out the window as I walked to the black sedan parked in front of the house.

He went in.

The car started.

And he disappeared down the street.

For several minutes no one spoke.

Kelly finally broke the silence.

-Well.

Phoebe let out a laugh.
