At 35, I married my wealthy 72-year-old boss so my daughter and I wouldn’t end up homeless. After he died, his lawyer looked at me and said, “He prepared this trap specifically for you… and he knew you would fall into it.”

“Before you open this, there is something you need to know.”

I stared at him.

The expression on his face had completely changed.

“Months before your husband died, he gave me very specific instructions. I was supposed to tell you first that uvryou had inherited nothing… and only then was I allowed to give you this envelope.”

“Why?”

The lawyer stared at me silently for several seconds.

Then he slowly pushed the envelope toward me.

“Because he wanted to see whether, even after his death, you would do exactly what he predicted you would do. And Laura… you just did.”

My heart began pounding.

“What did I do?”

He simply pointed at the envelope.

“Open it. But I should warn you—after you do, everything you thought you knew about William is going to change.”

With trembling hands, I picked up the envelope.

And when I pulled out the first thing inside, my breath caught in my throat.

I recognized it.

But I couldn’t understand how William could possibly have had it.

For several seconds, I just stared at the envelope.

William’s lawyer, Mr. Harris, sat across from me looking strangely calm.

“If I inherited nothing,” I finally asked, “why did you say he knew I would fall into the trap?”

Harris gave me a faint smile.

“Because he knew exactly what you would be thinking at this moment.”

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a letter written in William’s handwriting.

“Dear Laura,

If you’re reading this, then I’m no longer beside you. And if Harris followed my instructions correctly, you’ve just been told that you will receive nothing from my will.

You probably think I deceived you.

But keep reading.”

My hands began to shake.

Beneath the letter, I noticed a photograph.

It was old.

In the picture was a much younger William, probably around forty years old.

He was surrounded by a group of children.

I turned the photograph over.

An address was written on the back.

I recognized it immediately.

It was the address of the group home where I had spent years of my childhood.

“What is this?” I whispered.

Harris said nothing.

I continued reading.

William explained that when he was younger, he and his wife had been unable to have children. Eventually, they decided to use part of their money to help children living in foster care.

Over the years, William anonymously paid for the education, clothing, and medical needs of hundreds of children.

I had been one of them.

I stopped reading.

“What?”

Harris nodded.
