One evening, my daughter calmly said to me, “Mom, Grandpa told me I have a very beautiful body and that my figure is beautiful.” I smiled so I wouldn’t scare her… but that night, I had already decided I would never leave her alone with Grandpa again. 😱💔
My daughter, Emily, was twelve years old.
She said the sentence so casually, as if she were telling me what she had eaten for lunch at school.
I was standing in the kitchen at the time.
“Mom, Grandpa told me today that I have a very beautiful body.”
The glass in my hand froze in midair.
For a few seconds, I didn’t move.
Then, trying to sound as normal as possible, I asked,
“What did you say?”
“Nothing.”
“Why did he say that?”
Emily shrugged.
“I don’t know.”
I turned toward the sink so she wouldn’t see my face.
My father, Robert, was sixty-eight years old. Emily had been very close to him since she was little.
They often spent time together. My father picked her up from school, took her out for ice cream, and sometimes Emily spent a few hours at his house on Saturdays.
Until that day, I had never once thought I had any reason to worry. But now the same sentence kept repeating in my head.
You have a very beautiful body.
“Emily,” I asked again, “did Grandpa say anything else?”
She thought for a moment.
“He said I shouldn’t leturm anyone make me think there’s something wrong with my figure.”
I looked at her. Instead of calming me down, that answer only raised more questions.
“Where were you when he said that?”
