Something made me answer.
“Hello?”
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then I heard Ryan.
“Emily?”
His voice sounded breathless.
“Ryan? Where are you?”
“Is Margaret safe?”
“Yes. Where are you?”
There was a pause.
“I’m at the police station.”
That made no sense.
“What?”
Ryan explained that when he had arrived the night before, he had become suspicious almost immediately.
Susan told him Margaret was sleeping.
But Ryan noticed Margaret’s URM purse was still on the kitchen counter and heard faint banging beneath the floor.
When he tried to go downstairs, Susan blocked him.
They argued.
Then Susan accused him of stealing money from Margaret.
She had already called the police before he arrived.
Ryan was taken in for questioning.
Suddenly, everything made sense.
Susan had been trying to make Ryan look like the person taking advantage of Margaret.
If I had not entered the house that afternoon, I might have believed it too.
The police eventually located Susan at a nearby hotel.
The investigation continued for weeks.
Margaret later told me that several papers Susan had tried to get her to sign would have given Susan broad control over her finances.
Nothing had been completed.
Margaret changed every lock in the house.
She hired an attorney.
And she removed Susan from several important legal documents.
But the biggest surprise came several weeks later.
I was sitting with Margaret on her porch when Ryan arrived carrying groceries.
Margaret looked at me and smiled.
