
That wooden box is still on my table.
Sometimes I open it and read Eleanor’s letter again.
And every time I do, I think about how late I understood that Eleanor was never my punishment.
She was my salvation.
I married her because I wanted to use her.
And in the end, she left me something that no will could ever measure.
She left me a chance to become someone different.
So if someone reading this right now is using another person, deceiving them, or waiting for someone else’s pain to make their own life easier, remember this:
Sometimes life does not punish us immediately.
Sometimes it sends us someone who quietly shows us who we could have been all along.
I did not love Eleanor the way she deserved.
But she cared for me in a way that I am still trying to become worthy of.
And even after all these years, one question still follows me:
