He opened it and read only one line aloud.
“If Emily ever ends up in your classroom, please don’t tell her immediately. Make sure she’s ready first.”
I started crying.
The man I had feared for weeks had actually been trying to fulfill a promise he had made to my mother almost twenty years earlier.
But the biggest surprise was still waiting.
At the bottom of the box was a small car key.
I looked at them.
Professor Hayes smiled.
“Your mother drove a white vintage car on her first day of college. It was sold years ago.”
He paused.
“I found it.”
That afternoon, the three of us walked out of the university together.
Parked outside was a beautifully restored white car.
I touched the door and immediately started crying harder.
On the driver’s seat was one more note.
Written in my mother’s handwriting.
“If you’re reading this, then you’ve already gone farther than I ever got to see. I’m proud of you, my daughter.”
I looked at Professor Hayes.
For weeks, I had been convinced he wanted something terrible from me.
But in reality, he had been protecting one of the most precious secrets of my life.
And for the first time, I understood why he had always looked at me for so long.
He wasn’t really looking at me.
He was seeing the young student he had promised, twenty years earlier, that he would never forget.
