My daughter Emma’s 18th birthday was supposed to be one of the happiest evenings our family had ever had.

We had reserved a large table at a restaurant. There was me, my husband David, Emma, our younger son, a few relatives, and

David’s older brother, Robert.

Ever since Emma was little, she had simply called Robert “Uncle.”

Robert was 53 years old. He had never married and had no children of his own. But he had always had a special bond with Emma. He never forgot her birthdays, he showed up at school events, and in recent years he often told her:

We always assumed he was joking.

But that evening, Robert was acting strangely.

He barely spoke. Every time Emma laughed or posed for a  photo with someone, Robert watched her for a little too long.

At one point, I noticed him reach into the inside pocket of his jacket.

“Robert, what are you hiding?” I asked with a laugh.

He looked at me for a moment.

“You’ll see soon.”

I don’t know why, but something in his voice made me uneasy.

Then the cake arrived.

Emma blew out the candles, we all clapped, and I smiled at her.

“Make a wish.”

Emma closed her eyes for a moment, then laughed.

“Done.”

And that was when Robert suddenly stood up.

At first, I assumed he wanted to make a toast.

But he didn’t pick up his glass.

Instead, he walked over to Emma.

“Uncle, what are you doing?” she asked, still smiling.

Robert stopped in front of her.

“I’ve been waiting exactly eighteen years for this moment.”

The laughter around the table stopped instantly.
