The judge looked at him.
“People care, son. Sometimes they simply need to be reminded.”
The money collected that day was enough to buy food and medicine for the boy’s mother.
But the judge didn’t stop there.
He contacted a local charity and arranged medical assistance for her.
Then he helped the boy find a part-time job that would allow him to continue going to school.
Before the boy left the courtroom, the judge called him back.
“What’s your name?”
“Adam, sir.”
“Adam, I want you to remember this day.”
“I will, Your Honor.”
Not because you stole bread. Remember it because this was the day you learned that one mistake does not have to define your entire life.”
Adam nodded.
Years passed.
Adam worked hard, stayed in school, and eventually went to university.
He became a lawyer.
But he never forgot the courtroom where his life had changed.
Years later, an old man was brought before him.
The man had been arrested for stealing food.
Adam looked at the case file.
Then he looked at the frightened man standing before him.
For a moment, he remembered himself at fifteen years old.
He remembered the bread.
He remembered his sick mother.
