The Last Night
“Honey.
She stroked my cheek.
I had to control each muscle so I wouldn’t move away.
“You look pale,” he whispered.
I smiled.
Or at least I tried to do it.
I think I need to sleep.
Flynn watched me for a few seconds too long.
“Sure. Rest.
He kissed my forehead.
I felt nauseous.
Not for the pills.
For him.
I waited until I heard the door closing.
Then I opened my eyes.
And I smiled.
Because I had just understood something.
Flynn didn’t know I was awake.
But someone else does.
My phone vibrated only once under the pillow.
MARCUS: RECEIVED. WE’RE IN POSITION. DON’T DO ANYTHING UNTIL WE CONFIRM YOU.
I closed my eyes.
For the first time since I heard that conversation, I was able to breathe.
But the tranquility lasted less than a minute.
I heard steps in the hallway.
Then a dry punch.
The door opened.
It Was Fiona.
“She’s asleep?”
“Completely,” Flynn replied.
Let me see her.
I felt the mattress sink.
Fiona sat next to me.
Her fingers touched my neck.
They were looking for my pulse.
“He’s breathing very slowly.
I told you the dosage works.
What if he wakes up?
Flynn let out a laugh.
“He won’t wake up.
Fiona remained silent.
Then he said something that froze my blood.
There is a problem.
I barely opened my eyes.
Enough to see it.
What problem?
“The captain.
Flynn joined.
What about him?
“It has changed course.
Silence.
“Where?
I don’t know.
“Then find out.
Fiona came out in a hurry.
Flynn stayed in the room.
I was still motionless.
Until I heard his footsteps approach.
He leaned over me.
I’m sorry, Evelyn.
His voice was almost a whisper.
“Really.
I felt her fingers close around my wrist.
And then I realized that I had decided to advance the plan.
I wouldn’t wait until midnight.
I’d get up.
Or I’d die.
I opened my eyes.
“I’m sorry, too.
Flynn was petrified.
“What…?”
I hit his nose with all the strength I had left.
He screamed and backed down.
I got up staggering.
I wasn’t strong.
She wasn’t ready.
But she was alive.
And that was enough.
I ran to the door.
“EVELYN!
I didn’t look back.
I went out into the hallway.
The yacht alarm started to sound.
Once.
