I’m short of money for a payment.
I need help today.
The answers came quickly.
But the concern she expected never came.
His mother, Linda, called first.
Claire lowered her voice and tried to look scared.
“Mom, I don’t know what I’m going to do.”
There was a pause.
Then Linda asked the question Claire never forgot.
“What did you do now?”
It’s not “Are you okay?”
No “What happened?”
Just blame.
Claire explained that she was going through a bad time.
Linda sighed.
“Claire, I can’t help you out of trouble. Solve it yourself. Maybe Ryan can work more hours.”
Claire thanked him anyway.
That was the habit he had cultivated throughout his life.
He apologized even when he was hurt.
She remained polite even when she felt invisible.
Later that day, Ryan came home for lunch.
Claire was sitting at the kitchen table with a blank envelope and a false expired payment notice.
He looked at the man he had built a life with.
“Honey, I’m going late,” she said.
“Could you help me this month?”
Ryan looked at the role.
Then he looked at her.
His expression changed.
“You take care of the bills,” he said.
