Emily explained that Grandpa’s wound was infected after the operation. However, he had refused to return to the hospital because the treatment would be too expensive. I didn’t want our mother to ask for another loan. Mom was already working two jobs to pay the bills for the house and cover my college expenses.
Emily was in the last year of nursing. With the guidance of one of his teachers, he had learned to cleanse and bandage the grandfather’s wound.
“Then why were you showering every time?” I asked.
“To be as clean as possible and avoid causing another infection. I also changed my clothes. Grandpa made me promise not to tell anyone.
I turned to him.
Why didn’t you trust us?
Grandfather took a deep breath.
“Because your mother would have sold everything again to save me. I’m already an old man. I didn’t want you to lose your future because of me.

But Emily still seemed deeply concerned.
“I can’t do this alone anymore,” he said. The infection has gotten worse. You have to go to the hospital tonight.
Grandpa tried to protest, but I was already calling an ambulance.
At the hospital, the doctor told us that if we had waited just a few more days, the infection could have spread to the grandfather’s bloodstream. He was immediately admitted for emergency treatment.
Emily and I were sitting in the hallway when Mom ran in the doors. At first I was furious because we had hidden something so serious from her. Then he surrounded Emily with her arms and hugged her tightly.
“You tried to save him,” he said in tears. But you should never have had to endure something like that by yourself.
Grandpa stayed in the hospital for two weeks. When Emily’s nursing teacher learned of the cost of her treatment, she organized a fundraising campaign.
