Heat burned up my neck.
Nolan’s jaw tightened.
I knew then that Graham had not only forged my name.
He knew about the suite.
He knew about the storm.
He knew exactly where to strike.
Nolan looked at the phone in the center of the table.
“Graham,” he said quietly, “be very careful what you imply next.”
“I imply nothing. I observe patterns.”
“Then observe this,” Nolan replied. “The meeting is adjourned for ninety minutes.”
He ended the call.
No one moved.
Then he turned to me and said, in the calmest voice I had ever heard, “Miss Ward, come with me.”
The formality hurt more than I expected.
But when we stepped into the corridor and the door closed behind us, his mask cracked.
“Elena,” he said, reaching for me.
I stepped back.
Not because I didn’t want him.
Because I wanted him too much.
“If they prove this came from my tablet, I’m finished,” I said. “If they prove you protected me, you’re finished too.”
