“Janice wandered into the hallway,” Nora said. “She probably didn’t understand the financial details, but she heard the anger. She heard my name.”

“And Jeremy?”

“He may have heard more than anyone realized.”

I looked down at my daughter’s drawing.

“What does any of this have to do with his silence?”

Nora’s voice softened.

“He was five years old. He heard adults arguing about keeping someone quiet. His sister heard the same argument. The following day, she disappeared at the lake.”

My stomach turned.

“A child could connect those events,” Nora continued, “even if they were never connected in reality.”
