I looked at the notebook from the phone and then back to my granddaughter.
Rose hadn’t left us just memories.
He had left us the truth.
And Arthur had no idea we had it.
PART 2 — THE PLAN BEHIND THE SILENCE
Over the next two months, I let Arthur believe that I was nothing more than a grieving and exhausted grandfather. I requested full custody of Lucy, Rachel and April.
Arthur didn’t object.
In fact, he seemed relieved.
He referred to his daughters as a burden and was constantly talking about the new life he was preparing with his girlfriend, Brooke.
We met in the office of an attorney to sign the final custody documents.
Arthur arrived in a designer costume, looking at the clock every few minutes.
He signed each page with an expensive pen without reading more than a few lines.
I thought he was free of all responsibility related to Rose and the girls.
He was wrong.
The agreement didn’t just transfer custody.
By renouncing his guardianship rights, Arthur also renounced all authority over the accounts, trusts and assets that Rose had protected for her daughters.
He signed the document.
