At my daughter’s funeral, my son-in-law pointed to her daughters and announced, “They’re going to a foster home. I deserve a fresh start with my new fiancee.”

He sat by the living room window for hours, staring into the darkness.

Shortly after three in the morning, I heard soft steps in the kitchen.

Lucy appeared with a small bag of purple cloth glued to her chest. “Grandfather,” he whispered.

I put aside my coffee, which I hadn’t touched yet.

What’s the matter, honey?

His eyes were filled with fear.

“Mom didn’t die just because she was sick.

I stared at her.

“What do you mean?

Lucy left the bag on the table and untied the rope.

There were three things inside:

An old phone.

A worn-out notebook.

A small USB memory.

“Mom told us that if anything happened to her, we had to give them to someone who still wanted her.
